Hugo

Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key.

Based on Brian Selznkick's award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, this magical tale is Academy Award-winner Martin Scorsese's first film shot in 3D.

When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder—a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty.
Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen’s club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince’s murder makes her the killer’s next target. Holmes barely manages to save her life and, in return, she reluctantly agrees to help him.
The investigation becomes ever more dangerous as it leads Holmes, Watson and Sim across the continent, from England to France to Germany and finally to Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead as he spins a web of death and destruction—all part of a greater plan that, if he succeeds, will change the course of history.

UP

Quite simply another Disney Pixar classic,  they are a studio with an impeccable record, even their poorer movies such as Bolt remain enjoyable. The premise of ‘Up’ is simple enough. Carl is a retired balloon salesman and I don’t want to spoil the story too much but he decides to go on one final adventure and he ends up meeting some memorable characters along the way.
The feel offers humour, emotion and all the classic enjoyable moments of other Pixar films, it looks incredible in HD with all the colour showing ever so vivid. You’ll recognise some of the voices such as the Construction Foreman (Ratzenberger) who is best known for his role as Hamm in the Toy Story movies.
Unlike previous Pixar movies, this one feels to be a much sadder film, it does of course all become much nicer by the end but it is the development of the characters that make this movie so enjoyable. The characters feel memorable, the plot is memorable and the recurring jokes are also memorable. For the get go this is a family film that doesn’t fail to disappoint.
Whilst you may not feel this to be the likes of Toy Story or Finding Nemo, it still resides highly in the list of the top Pixar films, it’ll satisfy the kids and the adults and you can tell that Pixar have taken their time in polishing the animation and the script. It is quite simply a delightful film and it’s really quite difficult to criticise. Perhaps some people would like a little more depth to the plot but it is after all a Pixar film and aimed at families.
Up was a surprise winner at last years Oscars and it picked up 2 awards and was nominated for the best motion picture, there are reasons for these accolades, you simply won’t be disappointed with this film and as I mentioned at the beginning with Disney Pixar you always get a standard and that standard is raised here.

The Last Airbender

Movie: The Last Airbender
Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Genre: Fantasy, action, adventure
Starring: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel

Year: 2010
Origin: USA

Summary: The visual component on which this film mostly relies is let down by the bland acting and horrible script. Tread cautiously when contemplating viewing this film.
A live action film based on the hit animation series, the film follows Aang (Ringer), the element bender with the power to control all four elements; air, water, fire and earth. Aang and his company of friends partake in a journey of knowledge whilst the evil firebenders are in hot pursuit.
Unfortunately this film is about as mundane as a wet towel. The main character Aang is portrayed by one of the worst child actors ever conceived. This is ‘complimented’ with companions who are also horrid on screen – pretty much everyone in this film can’t act. The casting is absolutely dreadful.
The only decent thing in this film is the score, by James Newton Howard (The Dark Knight, Michael Clayton,  Blood Diamond). Epic at times, it is a refreshing oasis while having to sit through the film.  The graphics and audio are quite decent but the visual component of this piece is dragged down by the insipid script.

Avatar (2009)

Information
Directed by James Cameron
Starring : Sam Worthington; Zoe Saldana; Stephen Lang; Michelle Rodriguez; Sigourney Weaver; Joel David Moore; Giovanni Ribisi
Genre : Action ; Adventure ; Science Fiction
Year : 2009

Avatar is set in a spectacular world that pushes the limits of your imagination. Our hero begins an epic adventure that will lead him to fight to save a distant world, a world that will eventually be considered his.
The well known director of Titanic, James Cameron, began designing the film fifteen years ago, at a time when the means to realize his vision did not exist. Today, after about four years of intensive production, AVATAR offers a unique cinematic experience, driven by a whole new wave of special effects. A revolutionary technology invented for the film that leaves its place to the emotional authenticity of the characters, for a total immersion of the viewer into the intensity of the story.
We discover this distant world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine stuck in a wheelchair. Despite his paralysis, Jake remained a combatant in the depths of his being. He was recruited to go to light years from Earth, on Pandora, where powerful groups are mining a rare mineral used to solve the energy crisis on Earth. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic to humans, they have created the Avatar Program, which allows “drivers” to link their human spirit to an avatar, a biological body remotely controlled, able to survive in this atmosphere lethal. These avatars are hybrids created by crossing genetically human DNA with that of Na’vi, native of Pandora.
