Midnight in Paris

Director: Woody Allen
Stars: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Kurt Fuller

Gil (Owen Wilson), a successful but distracted Hollywood screenwriter, and his fiancée, Inez (Rachel McAdams), are in Paris, vacationing with Inez's wealthy, conservative parents (Mimi Kennedy, Kurt Fuller). Gil is struggling to finish his first novel, which is about a man who works in a nostalgia shop, and Inez and her parents are critical and demeaning of Gil's decision to give up his lucrative Hollywood career. They do not share his romantic view of Paris, and while Gil is considering moving to the city for inspiration, Inez is intent on living in Malibu. By chance, they are joined by Inez's friend Paul (Michael Sheen), a pseudo-intellectual who speaks with great authority but little actual substance or accuracy on the history and art of the city. Inez idolizes him but Gil, who is an ardent admirer of the Lost Generation, finds him insufferable.
After a wine tasting, Paul and his wife Carol (Nina Arianda) invite Inez and Gil to go dancing. Inez accepts but Gil, sick of Paul and a little drunk, declines and chooses to walk back to their hotel through the streets of Paris, eventually becoming lost. As he stops at a set of stairs, the midnight bells ring and an old-fashioned car pulls up at the corner and he is invited to join a group of fancily-dressed, champagne-drinking party-goers. They go to a bar, where to his shock, Gil discovers he has been transported to the 1920s, an era he admires and idolizes in his to-be-novel. He encounters Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Allison Pill and Tom Hiddleston), who take him to meet Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll). Hemingway agrees to show Gil's novel to Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates), and Gil goes to fetch his manuscript from his hotel. However, as soon as he leaves the bar, he is suddenly transported back to 2010.
Gil attempts to show Inez how he traveled into the past, but she refuses to believe him and peevishly returns to their hotel. Just after she leaves, the clock strikes midnight and the car pulls up again with Hemingway inside it. He takes Gil to meet Gertrude Stein, who agrees to read his novel and introduces him to Pablo Picasso (Marcial Di Fonzo Bo) and Picasso's mistress Adriana (Marion Cotillard), a strikingly beautiful student of couture to whom Gil is instantly attracted. The next day, back in 2010, Gil encounters Picasso's painting of Adriana at a museum, allowing him to show up Paul with intimate knowledge of the work.
Over the next few days, Gil spends each night in the past, telling Inez that he is wandering the streets getting inspiration for his novel. His late-night wanderings frustrate Inez and arouse the suspicion of her father, who hires a detective (Gad Elmaleh) to follow Gil. This proves unsuccessful, as the detective attempts to follow the car and winds up lost in the court of Louis XIV.
Gil spends increasing amounts of time with Adriana, who leaves Picasso and has a brief dalliance with Hemingway. Gil realizes that he is falling in love with her, leaving him increasingly conflicted and confused. He confides his predicament to Salvador Dalí (Adrien Brody), Man Ray (Tom Cordier) and Luis Buñuel (Adrien de Van), but being surrealists they consider his position to be totally normal and see nothing strange about his coming from the future.
While Inez shops for furniture at a street market in 2010, Gil connects with Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux), an antiques dealer who shares his fondness for the twenties. While there, he discovers Adriana's diary from the 20s in a used book stall, and, after receiving the aid of a friendly tour guide at the Rodin museum (Carla Bruni) to translate it, finds out that she was in love with him. Reading that she dreamt of receiving a gift of earrings from him and then making love to him, Gil attempts to steal a pair of earrings from Inez to give to Adriana but is thwarted by her early return from a trip.
Gil purchases earrings for Adriana and, returning to the past, confesses his love for her. As they kiss on a deserted street, a horse and carriage appear. They are invited inside by a richly-dressed couple and are transported to the Belle Époque, an era Adriana considers Paris' Golden Age. They are taken to the famous Maxim's Paris club, and meet Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Vincent Menjou Cortes), Paul Gauguin and Edgar Degas (François Rostain). The enthralled Adriana is offered a job designing ballet costumes, and proposes to Gil that they stay, but Gil realizes that despite the allure of nostalgia, it is better to accept the present for what it is. Adriana elects to stay in the past, and they sadly part ways.
Gil retrieves his novel from Gertrude Stein, who praises his progress as a writer but questions why the main character has not realized that his fiancee (based on Inez) is having an affair with a pedantic character clearly based on Paul. Gil returns to the present and confronts Inez. She admits to sleeping with Paul but claims that it can be forgotten when they return to California. Gil breaks up with Inez and decides to remain in Paris. Taking a walk at midnight, he unexpectedly meets Gabrielle, and offers to walk her home, indicating that they will start a relationship.

Your Highness

When this movie began I was laughing.  It had really good jokes and the characters were very different from what you would normally see in other fantasy movies. Instead of doing a parodies of other movies in this genre. This one had the potential to be a complete orignal.  However somewhere after the first 35 minutes someone forgot that the movie was suppose to be funny.
In this medeival tale we meet Prince Fabious(James Franco) a very brave and noble knight whose bride(Zooey Deschanel) has been kidnapped by the evil Leezar(Justin Theroux). In an attempt to rescue his bride he enlists the help of his brother Thadeous(Danny McBride) who is not as competant and brave as he should be. Durring thier quest they meet up with a very skilled fighter named Isabel(Natalie Portman) who wants todestroy Leezar as well.  But all Thadeous wants is to have sex with her.  Well at least he has high priorities.

In most of these comedies the one brother that is labled a goof up is actually really sweet and humble.  While the suave and succesful brother isonly interested in himself and not in the welfare of others.  This movie shows us that Thadeous is indeed a screw up who is jealous of his brother’s succsess. He finds it unfair that Fabious gets to go out on quests while he stays behind, but he never actually volenteers to go on any.  He wants totake credit and get the reward, but not do any of the work.  Fabious on the other hand is actually a real nice guy who generally cares for his brother no matter what trouble he gets into.  There could have been a great moment where the brothers bonded, but I’m sure that would be too damn sappy. After all this is a raunchy “R” rated comedy right.
When they decided to edit down “The King’s Speech” from an R to a PG-13.  It was a dumb idea, because the use of the F word was important to the storyand to the main character’s development.  The use of foul langauage in “Your Highness” was like watching a five year old discover the word.  Yes it’svery funny the first few times, but than it becomes really old, really fast.  This one could have easily been edited down and probably made more money. If they were going to keep this as a restricted movie I wish they would get into some more taboo subjects or at least have more nudity in it.  Theactors all do a great job with the script and this could have been a great 30 minute pilot.  There’s just not enough weight to carry this for a full 90 minutes.

Grown Ups

Grown Ups is set as a family movie which shows the everlasting relationship between friends and how the old fashion lifestyle can be fun. I personally liked the movie because of its fun-filled family story. I thought the story was very good as it refers to going back to camping and small traditions. Instead of having such commodities around you to make a day seem fun, they just take the simple view of the world through a camping trip and have fun with the slightest technology.
The movie is just another Adam Sandler movie. It is a movie that is trying to make you feel good. I am not saying that is a bad thing, I do like the movie and it’s plot. This is also not just another complex cleverly directed movie. It is one of those simple movies where you can see what is going on and relate to it and I like that. It gave me more of a relaxed feeling to it. This is one of those movies that you go to watch when you are not feeling good and want to cheer up. Especially if you have been out camping or outdoors with your family and had a good time because this movie can easily remind of you of those times and make you feel happy again.
The comedy in the movie is very nice and it’s the kind of comedy that you can relate to as well with your family members. I really liked it because there were certain parts that reminded me of things that happened within my family. Most of the time it was with my brothers, but it always makes me laugh. This movie also comes with a nice moral and lesson that shows you the great power of the outdoors and being together with your friends and family.
I would say that if you really like family movies and some nice comedy this would be a good movie to watch. But, if you are into the more smarter movies, it may not be your scene.

Dinner for Schmucks

Dinner for Schmucks is the kind of movie that indulges both the business filled smart world to the comical idiot world. The combination of Steve Carrel and Zack Galifianakis was made the movie great. They perfectly portray two people who have extensive imaginations and clearly show their inner idiot. Both of their reputations of being hilarious have certainly shown to be true.
Also, I thought that the combination of the boring businessman, Paul Rudd, with the outgoing idiot, Steve Carrel, was very unique and made the movie interesting. There are times in the movie when Paul is very serious while Steve is doing a great job of just turning it into a great big laugh.
There are certain scenes in the movie that are just unforgettable because of how funny and how stupid it is at the same time. It is definitely Steve Carrel at his finest. His acting in the movie was fantastic. He has now recently been nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for Best actor in a motion picture, Comedy or Musical.
The movie itself is a copy of the french movie, Diner des Cons. I have seen both movies and they both have different kinds of comedy within the movie. Also, Dinner for Schmucks is more Americanized and uses more current American teenage comedy views. The kind of comedy that is shown through some very stupid things such as hitting someone or just being a flat out knucklehead. They were both good in my opinion and when I watched them both, I had some good laughs.
Although the actors were great, the comedy in the movie is all over the place. Some of it has to be thought about while others are just plain out obvious. There are many that would go against some of the stupid comedy that is shown in the movie. But, I would certainly consider watching this movie again with friends if I get the chance. Overall, the movie does a good job of making that boring Sunday night into a fun, laughing-filled night with your friends.

The Other Guys

From the director of titles such as ‘Step Brothers’ and ‘Anchorman’ comes a new action comedy about two wannabe heroes – Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) and Allen Gamble (Ferrell). After discovering evidence of a multi-billion dollar cash coverup, the two are dedicated to solving the case – leading to several laugh out loud moments. In combining this odd pair with several completely random moments which as a whole don’t contribute to the overall story line at all, the movie achieves a level of humor that has not been seen in the cinemas for months.
New to comedy, Wahlberg successfully acts opposite comedy aficionado Ferrell in what makes for a successful comedy duo. Filled with explosions, car chases and gun fire, the budget is utilized triumphantly to create an action packed atmosphere, with laughs-a-plenty.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Balthazar (Cage) is a modern day sorcerer fighting against the forces of evil who are trying to destroy the world (original, I know). Both the evil and good sides are searching for the inheritor of Merlin’s powers, Jay Baruchel.
The simplicity of the story line radiates throughout the whole film. Apart from some pretty decent special effects the dialogue is about as dry as the acting and the amount of plot holes is phenomenal. It’s obvious that the director decided that instead of writing a whole and corresponding script he decided to utilise the old fashioned “I’ll make up a spell to counter that whole idea” so as to avoid explanations.
Perhaps this is a bit harsh for kids film (I hope it’s a kids film..) but I had higher expectations for this film, especially as the ‘Fantasia’ scene was talked up and ended up being sub-par, though it does have some entertainment value to it. I would recommend it as a rainy day holiday film for young teenagers.

Jumping The Broom

Noah, Alex, Ricky, Chance and their significant others take a trip to Martha’s Vineyard for a weekend wedding getaway. As each couples relationship is further investigated, drama begins to unfold. Noah, a screenwriter, asks his friends for advice on furthering his relationship to a more serious level while maintaining success in his work.Chance and Eddie hope to recover their seven year marriage but it seems to have lost its spark. Ricky, a playboy, is all about the college ladies but is hiding a secret he does not want anyone to know. This is will be a hilarious comedy for sure.
