Throughout movie history, there have been moments where everything just, well, works. I’m talking about movies where a star-studded cast is brought together by the love of the project, a passion to tell a story and a willingness to undergo production for a fraction of the wage of other roles. I like to think of these movies as “Super-Movies”. This is not a Super-Movie. This film felt as though they had bagged all the cast members first, then wrote some tired old story line to show-off the cast members. I’m not saying this film is without merit, but without the appeal of the cast, this movie may well have slipped through the fragile fingers of recognition all together. The movie is based around Lisa (Reese Witherspoon), an Olympic Gold Medal-Winning softball player, who gets dropped from the team due to her age. George (Paul Rudd) has his own difficulties when he gets indicted from his father’s (Jack Nicholson) company due to an investigation into the companies monetary situation. These two separate situations would have been a good choice in which to go deeper and develop the story from there, but as I said, the tired old story comes into affect here. One of Lisa’s friends had given George Lisa’s number, to help her date a “non-athlete”. This leads to George and Lisa’s paths crossing, both of them reaching enlightened conclusions about their own lives and everntually ending up falling madly in love with each other.
