From Zach Snyder, the director of the 300 and Watchmen comes Sucker Punch – an Action Fantasy Thriller set in a mental institution in the 1960′s. Starring Emily Browning (from A Series of Unfortunate Events fame) as Baby Doll, Abbie Cornish as Sweet Pea, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung, this film is an action-packed-girl-power-kickass movie.
Institutionalized by her Stepfather, Baby Doll at twenty years of age enters a world of fantasy and pain as she attempts to lead herself and fellow inmates to freedom. To do so, she must go on journey to find five objects – a map, fire, knife, key and a fifth revealed object. To collect these objects she must enter a world of fantasy through erotic dance.
The digital graphics in the movie are stunning. Along with the other four girls and a guide, Baby Doll enters battle against massive Samurai, World War 1 Nazi Zombies, killer robots, and dragons. The soundtrack too is amazing, with hits such as Sweet Dreams (sung by the main character, Emily Browning), White Rabbit and Tomorrow Never Knows, remixed, being used to beautiful effect
At the risk of being too corny, Snyder has made this film dark and violent. Much like his previous films, the viewer will be taken on a wild ride through the senses. There is a cameo by John Hamm, and most of the screen time is taken by Browning and Cornish, two Aussies who portray their characters very well. This film is highly recommended for anyone with a thirst for action. Don’t however enter this movie expecting amazing plot and dialogue – rather for a breathtaking viewer experience.
